The Pathway to a Healthier You

Let’s face it, most of us are not our healthiest selves. But how do we become a healthier person, and what exactly does that mean? Well, there are three points to touch on if you ask me. Let’s dive in a little deeper.

Quit getting sick!

This is a lot easier said than done. And getting healthier while you are sick is even harder to do! So the best way to combat is to do everything you can to avoid getting sick.

I am a big believer in holistic health. Essential oils, natural foods and products, etc. I’m not a full-on hippy, but I am known to always suggest the more natural way to health.

If you are wanting to try essential oils, I suggest starting small and doing your research. My obsession has grown over the last couple years, but I am still a novice and probably not the best person to teach about oils. What I do suggest is staying away from MLMs like Young Living or DoTerra. They mark up their prices way too high and you can get quality essential oils elsewhere.

If you are interested in a post about essential oils, leave me a comment!

Other ways to avoid getting sick are the obvious suggestions, wash your hands regularly, avoid people who are ill, sanitize often, wash your clothing and bedding regularly, etc.

Eat right, and get Active

Back to the all natural foods I mentioned earlier. If you know me, you know I love to eat. You also know that I love food that is not good for me. However, unfortunately, I know better.

Every time I eat right and go on a “Diet” or a “Life Style Change”, I feel 10X better! I can tell when I am eating crappy and I tend to get sick easier when I do.

A minute ago (like a long time ago) I started a category of posts called “Healthy Eats” where I talked a lot about meal prepping and planning and good foods to eat.

Let me know if you want me to start that back up again!

The #1 thing you can to do eat right is to drink at least 64oz of water a day. I know that sounds like a lot, but I promise you, it’s worth it! Try incorporating fruits and veggies into your diet too!

As for getting active, if you are like me and get little to no activity at work or even at home, you should try getting outside with your kids. In the summer take them to the park, in the winter take them sledding. There are plenty of things to keep you moving outside.

Be Happier

A happier person is one that treats themselves right. If you value yourself or your sanity, be kind to yourself and be happier. I know, this sounds SO easy, right? Well, for me, it’s honestly not that easy.

Every day you have the opportunity to wake up and CHOOSE to be happy! Click To Tweet

Some things that I like to do to stay happy include: Playing with my son, snuggling my husband, spending time with friends and family, my essential oils, watching TV, reading a good book, chocolate, taking a shower, getting ready for the day, and (believe it or not) cleaning!

Yes, you heard me right, I said cleaning. I HATE cleaning! I am the laziest person ever, but after my house is clean, I feel so much better, and I can finally relax. Plus, once I get started, I tend to start organizing everything and end up cleaning even more.

Well, there you have it!

Those are the 3 things I try to focus on to make myself a healthier person. My final suggestion would be to write it down! The trendy thing now is to have a bullet journal or planner. I like to write my goals in that and track my progress. If you are interested at all in my previous post, click here! I talk about my New Years Resolutions and my simple game plan to stick to it.

I want to try to write a post a month to help keep myself on track with my resolutions and goals. Keep your eyes open for that too!

My 2018 New Year’s Resolution, and How I Plan to Stick to it!

Did you make a New Year’s Resolution?

I sure did! This year I decided to mix it up a little and do the same resolution I always do… With a little spin!

I promise I mixed it up slightly…

My New Year’s resolution is:

To treat my body better!

Yup, every year I tell myself I am going to “Be Healthier”, “Lose Weight”, “Exercise More”, Etc. Etc. Blah, Blah, Blah! Every year I do great for like a minute, or even half the year! But this year is different!

I simply, want to treat my body better

There is more to this than eating healthy and working out. For example, one of my goals is to wash my face every night before I go to bed. I also want to use lotion more and keep my skin hydrated.

So how do I plan on sticking to this?

Well for one, I have a community to help me stick to it. That’s all of you! I also like to make short term and long term goals with rewards for meeting those goals. Rewards don’t always work for everyone, but it gives me something to look forward too!

For example:

I am going to pick 3 goals to work on every month, with the end goal of treating my body better. My goals for January are:

  1. Wash my face every night.
    1. If I wash my face every night before bed, after 30 days I am going to treat myself to a relaxing facial!
  2. Drink 64oz or more of water every single day.
    1. If I am able to do this for 30 days, I am going to treat myself to a wonderful full body massage!
  3. Read daily!
    1. This is the reward in itself! I love to read, it relaxes me. Reading strengthens the mind and offers some sort of peace to the crazy days!

How am I going to keep myself accountable?

I plan on tracking everything in a journal, or a planner of sorts. That way I can keep track and make sure I am following up every day! The goal is that after 30 days, these will become a habit and I can continue them with ease.

I also plan to leaning on my friends and family, like YOU! In return, I hope that you lean on me for help as well. I plan on writing more about your needs and the things you want help with and the things you are interested in.

Leave me a comment below of what you would like to see next!

How to Save Money During the Holidays

The “Holidays”, the dreaded holidays…

Oh yeah, I think you know exactly where this is going! The holidays can be stressful, so stressful it will make your HAIR FALL OUT! Okay, maybe not everyone is like that, but sometimes the holidays can be super stressful. BUT, if you can SAVE just a little bit of money, it could be less stressful! So while you are trying to plan your parties, get gifts for everyone, wrap presents, work, be a mom, and all that other stuff lets talk about some tips to help you save a little green this holiday season!

Make a list, and check it twice…

Ha! I’m serious! One of the easiest ways to keep a level head and to save some cash is to make a list. I write a shopping list when I have to buy for a party. I make a list when I have to buy presents for people. Hell, I even make a list of naughty and nice friends! JUST KIDDING, but not really… It’s on my whiteboard in my office lol, but that is a running joke.

Friends and Family Discounts

I can hear it now, “I don’t have any friends” “No one in my family works in retail”. Well, guess what? You do! How many of your friends are distributors, or work a second job during the season? Shop local, keep your eyes and ears open, and be optimistic! All you have to do is ask. What’s the worst that could happen? They could say no, and then you continue on.

Use Coupons

YAASSSS! This is the best. Shop at stores where you get rewards, keep your eyes open for GIVEAWAYS, and watch the paper and online ads for coupons. There are PLENTY of coupons out there, and they are EVERYWHERE! Before you check out at an online store, Google coupons for that company. I can usually find one 7 out of 10 times.

Get your DIY on!

Do It Yourself! Get your inner Crafty Cat out! Inside everyone is a little bit of creativity. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or elaborate. It can be simple and easy. Some of the most thoughtful gifts are made from the heart!

Super Spotlight, Roddom’s Rustic Designs (GIVEAWAY POST)

YAY! December is finally here!

I LOVE December! For multiple reasons too. My birthday, the season of GIVING, all the lights, the decorations, etc. Today is the perfect day to introduce you to Lakota. She and I went to high school together! Lakota has started her own business, and well, I’ll just let her tell you more about it!

Remember to read all the way through to find out about our FIRST giveaway of the 12 Days of Giveaways!

Roddom’s Rustic Designs- Where we began!

I have always had a passion for creating. I started out making small crafts with my siblings and scrapbooking when I was young. As I got older I started doing more wood crafts and home decor items. I always had ideas forwarding around in my head about what project I wanted to work on next!
~
Justin took many woodworking classes in school and enjoyed building. He would often build wood projects such as picture frames and holiday decor to give as Christmas presents.
~
As we were dating he would often build small gifts for me.  He spent a weekend in his uncle’s shop with a stack of barn wood and made me a beautiful rustic bedframe. Five years later I refuse to upgrade our bed to a bigger size because I do not want to get rid of the frame he built.

(Make sure to “Like” Lakota’s Facebook and Instagram when you are done reading this post! Links at the bottom)

As we moved into our first place together we were short on cash and needed a few additional pieces of furniture and had very little decor.  We tore apart some old pallets left from the hay pile and a few evenings later we now had matching nightstands. I took leftover scraps and starting making a few pallet signs to decorated our bare walls. Before we knew it people had seen the stuff we built and wanted one of their own or would request custom pieces.
~
We have since expanded and built many different furniture pieces, some of which include- coffee tables, end tables, kitchen tables, entryway tables, tree halls, shelves and more.  Most all of our home decor pieces are all made from the scrap wood pile left from whatever the last big project was. We love creating and spending time in the shop together and now take our son to the shop with us where he enjoys playing and watches us work.

Take a look at her work!

AT HOME DATE NIGHT IDEAS with Erin from Everyday Events!

Erin with Everyday EventsI’m Erin and the writer behind Everyday Events.

I’m a mom, wife, party planner, holiday lover and blogger.

Blogging has been something I have wanted to do for years, but never felt like I had anything special to bring to the table. I toyed with the idea and talked to my husband about it multiple times, but always pushed my feelings aside. In 2014 my life got flipped upside down when I received a phone call that my Mom was in ICU and not expected to make it. This life changing event is what drove me to start blogging. I felt a fire inside of me and a conviction to tell my story. So I started Everyday Events as a way to honor my Mom, to talk about being a motherless mother and to show how beautiful life can be, even after loss. I have a passion for celebrating life’s everyday events and never want to stop seeing the beauty in the world. I hope you find comfort and inspiration in my blog, but above all I hope you find a reason to celebrate.

AT HOME DATE NIGHT IDEAS

Real date nights don’t happen that often around here. With J.D.’s crazy work schedule, it can be hard to set aside time to go out on a date. So, we had to get creative, and come up with at home date night ideas for when the kids go to bed! All of these dates are so fun and I always look forward to when J.D. comes home early from work, we put the kids to bed, and go “out on a date.” So put those kids to bed early tonight and have a date night!
At Home Date Night Ideas with Erin from Everyday Events
“When I first made contact with Everyday Events, I LOVED her website. I fell in love with this post particularly, because it spoke to what I needed in life at that moment.” -Lynsey from Real Mom Blogs
One. Order take out, light a few candles & pop open a bottle of wine. This is our go-to date night idea, because if you have small children, you know dinner time can be a circus. Everybody needs something, forks are being dropped on the floor, milk is almost always being spilled, and just when J.D. and I get to sit down our food is cold & the kids say they are done. Eating dinner while it’s hot, enjoying a glass of wine and having an adult conversation is easily one of our favorite things to do.
Two. Lay out some blankets and watch the stars. J.D. and I have also been known to grab the baby monitor and climb on top of the roof! There is something so romantic about watching the stars and making a wish on the shooting ones.
Three. Conversation starters. Sometimes it feels like all J.D. and I talk about are the kids, work & what’s going on currently in our lives. We don’t talk about our dreams, hopes & fears as much as we should. A while back I started looking online and found some amazing conversation starters. When J.D. is gone a lot for work or when life gets super hectic, we will bring these out to reconnect, and remember there is more to talk about than the kids!

Want to get something across to your husband? Go to our Dear Husband category!

Four. Sit on the patio, turn on some music & watch the sun set.
Five. Eat popcorn & play card games. J.D. and I both grew up playing card games and love playing together. It brings back so many wonderful childhood memories and I love making these memories with J.D. too. This is a perfect date night idea for winter, when you literally can’t go anywhere!
Six. Have a picnic in the living room and watch a movie. This one is super fun and you can be as creative as you want with your picnic. You could have fondue, wine or beer tasting, or theme the evening with food and a movie from a different country!

J.D. and I have been together for 12 years, and while so many things have changed, one thing remains the same. We love each other like crazy. These date night ideas might not be super fancy, or cost us much money, but they help up to reconnect, laugh, and make our marriage a priority.
What are your favorite at home date night ideas?

What it’s REALLY like to Transition your Toddler from a Car Seat to a Booster Seat

As most of you know, my son recently turned 4 years old in June. After weeks and weeks of talking to my husband prior to his birthday about how big he is and how he is outgrowing his car seat, we decided to make the transition to a Booster Seat.

I know! Oh my gosh!

These days, you have to seriously consider every option when considering life changing decisions for your kids. Questions like; When you start solid foods? When to change their car seat? Should I let my son do karate? Is now, in line to check out, really the time to let my kid have a tantrum, or do I go straight to monster mom? Should I switch him to a booster seat?

Unfortunately, the world expects you to do what they want you to do. They want you to raise your children exactly the same way they raised theirs. The days of “Mom instinct” are gone!

So, of course, when considering to transition my son, I got major anxiety about it. But my son kept telling me, “Mom! It’s squishing me! Mom! My weenie hurts! Mom!” I felt so bad! I would loosen the straps to relieve some of the pressure, but then it was too loose for my comfort on his shoulders.

Finally, I said screw it! I looked at the height and weight of the seat he was in versus the booster I wanted to get. He met the requirements for the booster, even though he still met the requirements for the car seat too. I looked it up online and finally decided to ask his pediatrician when he went in for his 4-year wellness check up.

Check out my post about the MEAN kid! http://wp.me/p8aYjD-dz

What his pediatrician said surprised me!

He said, “Well, what do you think? What is your gut telling you?” I thought about that for a second. Part of me wanted to snap back with, “What the hell are the regulations?” But instead, I told him that I wanted to move him into a booster seat for ease and comfort.

So he told me to do it! He said, and I quote, “Mothers are starting to ignore their maternal instinct to do what is “right” by other moms. Don’t let society tell you how to raise your child.” He then went on to tell me that if he meets the requirements for the booster seat, then there must have been tests on that booster seat to make it safe for children of his age, height, and weight.

Well, that was good enough for me!

So we switched it, and about a month later I found this article about “When should my child switch from a car seat to a booster seat?” from Baby Center. This quote is from their article.

“You can safely switch your child to a booster seat if she’s at least 4 years old and she weighs 40 pounds or more or has grown too tall for her car seat (when her shoulders are higher than the top set of harness-strap slots in the car seat’s back).” -Stephanie Tombrello Child passenger safety specialist

That is exactly what happened to my son! He weighs about 40-42 lbs, his shoulders were right at the harness-strap slots, and he is 4 years old! Plus, he is a boy, and it was hurting his boy parts… That is reason enough for me. I want my son to be comfortable!

In conclusion…

I am not going to ask for your opinions on this because frankly, I am just going to follow my own instincts and ignore all of your suggestions anyway.

BUT, I do want to know, what are the funniest things your children have said to you! I want to write a post about the craziest things we hear come out of their tiny mouths.

My personal favorite is, “Mommy, why are people fat?

Instagram Giveaway WINNER! Everyday Amanda

Remember that one time, when I did an Instagram giveaway? Yeah, well meet Amanda, our winner!

Everyday Amanda

Hello, all!

I just want to give a quick shout out to Lynsey at Real Mom Blogs for thinking I’m worthy to be in the spotlight. It’s exciting and unreal, but I thank her! So, so much!

Anyway, a little about moi.

I’m a wife and stay at home mom to 2 crazy kids. Olivia is 10 and going into 5th grade and Alex is 6 and he will be a big 1st grader! My husband is a very hardworking man that is moody and goofy. We have had some ups and downs but mostly ups in these last years.
I am surprised (and a little sad) to say I will be hitting the big 4-0 this year! Although I look like I’m in my early 20s, only because I’m short! A whopping 5 feet! (Hubs says 4’ 11”, but he’s a liar). But I really don’t feel my age. I still sometimes find myself shocked when I say I’m a mom.

I live in a small town in Pennsylvania.

My husband and I have been together for 20 years this year! Married for 12 years in September. I am 3 ½ years older than my hubs. But I feel like he is the older one. I’m a procrastinator. And I’d rather watch a movie with my kiddos than go outside. I’m an indoor person fo sho! We have a Yorkie named Maggie. She will be 13 this year! And she was our 1st baby. She is a part of our family and is very spoiled!

I got into blogging by accident.

A friend of mine, who homeschools her 5 kids, was always telling me crazy stories about her kids. I’m like, you should start a blog! Share your stories! So, I started looking into blogging to help and share with her some info, and started reading and reading and pinning and pinning and started thinking and wondering… “Hey. maybe I could do this?”. I started toying with it but pushed it off thinking “Nah, no one would read what I have to say”.  Long story short, I wrote a few posts, hubs said go for it, what do you have to lose? And here I am! A blogger for about 2 ½ months!

I like to say my blog is a “personal/mom/lifestyle/mishmash” blog.

I write about everyday stuff that when I’m typing it up… it just kinda flows. I do have a million blog post ideas written down, but some only produce a few sentences while others just write themselves. My blog is my first time ever writing, so I was worried about people reading it. But it looks like I have a few people that enjoy what I have to say which is seriously crazy and awesome!

When I’m not messing with the blog…

…or sharing it on social media, I’m usually watching TV or reading. I also love listening to music and singing along… reeeally loud! (In the privacy of my own home, of course!). I love holidays. Especially the ones that gather all the family together. I like to spend time with my family and relax, especially over summer because school time can be pure chaos. With both kids in school and soccer and my daughter in piano, some nights are crazy! So, summer is a nice, slow time for us.

That’s about all I have about me! I hope you stop by and check out my little slice of the internet, laugh and relate with my everyday parenting shenanigans.

Thanks again for having me Lynsey @ Real Mom Blogs!!!

Doesn’t that Goodie Bag look awesome?

Well, guess what!? I am going to post tomorrow the details of everything that was in the goodie bag. In the meantime, tell me what kind of giveaway you would like to see next!

Super Spotlight, Rachel Wilser

“My toddler twins are some of the worst sleepers on the planet, and every few months hubs thinks he has a new plan to fix it. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work, and I end up 10 times more tired than before. -Rachel Wilser”

Friends, meet Rachel Wilser. She is an incredible mom of twins that you just HAVE to meet! Here is a little summary of her life, followed by a Q&A with cute pictures of said twins. I hope you enjoy!

Rachel Wilser's Twins

In any case, let me give you the brief summary of my life. The briefest summary is to say that I live the life of a vagabond. I grew up in the Midwest (which is why I love both beer and casseroles so much), and in my mid-twenties got an itch that if I didn’t do something dramatic with my life I might live forever in the same town. (Which sounded tragic at 25, but at 33 sounds delightful.) So I moved to DC. Where I knew exactly 3 people, and 2 of them lived with me.

I nannied, bartended, and scraped my way through my first year until I decided to go back to school for an M.Ed. I spent the next year student teaching and in grad school full time, but was able to finish my program in just a year. Then I got engaged that fall and married in 2012.

We lived a pretty unremarkable life–normal, slightly boring, but satisfying. The fall after I turned 30 the hubs convinced me it was time to attempt procreation, and after a few month my overachieving uterus produced not one, but two babies (yes, they’re twins, yes, they’re boys, yes, they’re identical). Shortly after our boys turned 1, the hubs called me from work one day and asked how I felt about moving to Germany. So now, we live in Germany with three toddlers–two humans, one canine.

What does M. Ed stand for? Can you elaborate?

Masters of Education; I attended a program at The George Washington University that was specifically geared towards preparing teachers for urban schools. What kind of puppy do you have? (Do you have any pictures?)

What kind of puppy do you have?

Sadie, Rachel Wilser's lab mix

Sadie is a lab mix; she’s a rescue, so we don’t know what her mix is, but we joke that it’s shark because she has a serious overbite!

Do you enjoy living in Germany? What is your favorite and least favorite part?

I do enjoy living in Germany; I’ve always considered myself independent and self-reliant, and I think that this experience is stretching those limits. My joke answer to my favorite part of living in Germany is that there’s never an inappropriate time to have a coffee or a beer. The real answer is that it’s so easy and affordable to do so much traveling; our boys will have full passports before they’re in kindergarten! My least favorite part is definitely the distance from family and close friends. I’m really close to my parents and brother, so only seeing them once a year is tricky. Luckily, it’s 2017 and I can FaceTime the crap out of them. =)

Your life sounds kind of crazy, how do you keep it together? Do you have any advice for moms around the world to help keep their cool?

Twin boys, playing

Confession time: I’m actually super old school, and am honestly the only person I know, besides my mom, who still uses a daily paper calendar. I don’t really count her, though, because she uses those super tiny ones that you just slid in your purse. Whereas mine is a little larger so that I can fit playdates, doctor’s appointments, deadlines, social commitments, etc. on it. It’s color coded because I’m into that. But seriously–when people ask me if we’re free to do something that’s the first place I look. It helps me stay balanced, organized, and prepared. My advice for moms is one of my favorite quotes: “Comparison is the thief of joy”. It’s easy to look at someone else and they think have more, but a) you have no idea if that’s true or not, and b) you’re doing great, too, mama! Just look around at all you have and find your joy in it.

Why did you start blogging, and what is your niche?

I started blogging because people always ask a ton of questions about twins, but it’s evolved slightly from there. I would say that my niche is family travel and raising multiples. It’s important to me that we’re still having fun, and didn’t end our previous lives to raise children.

Even for those who know you, what is something about you that usually surprises people when they find out?

This is totally random, but my parents (mostly just my mom) were really strict//vigilant about the shows and movies we watched as kids, so there are gobs of movies from the late 80s and early 90s that everyone talks about all the time that I still haven’t seen.
