The Pathway to a Healthier You

Let’s face it, most of us are not our healthiest selves. But how do we become a healthier person, and what exactly does that mean? Well, there are three points to touch on if you ask me. Let’s dive in a little deeper.

Quit getting sick!

This is a lot easier said than done. And getting healthier while you are sick is even harder to do! So the best way to combat is to do everything you can to avoid getting sick.

I am a big believer in holistic health. Essential oils, natural foods and products, etc. I’m not a full-on hippy, but I am known to always suggest the more natural way to health.

If you are wanting to try essential oils, I suggest starting small and doing your research. My obsession has grown over the last couple years, but I am still a novice and probably not the best person to teach about oils. What I do suggest is staying away from MLMs like Young Living or DoTerra. They mark up their prices way too high and you can get quality essential oils elsewhere.

If you are interested in a post about essential oils, leave me a comment!

Other ways to avoid getting sick are the obvious suggestions, wash your hands regularly, avoid people who are ill, sanitize often, wash your clothing and bedding regularly, etc.

Eat right, and get Active

Back to the all natural foods I mentioned earlier. If you know me, you know I love to eat. You also know that I love food that is not good for me. However, unfortunately, I know better.

Every time I eat right and go on a “Diet” or a “Life Style Change”, I feel 10X better! I can tell when I am eating crappy and I tend to get sick easier when I do.

A minute ago (like a long time ago) I started a category of posts called “Healthy Eats” where I talked a lot about meal prepping and planning and good foods to eat.

Let me know if you want me to start that back up again!

The #1 thing you can to do eat right is to drink at least 64oz of water a day. I know that sounds like a lot, but I promise you, it’s worth it! Try incorporating fruits and veggies into your diet too!

As for getting active, if you are like me and get little to no activity at work or even at home, you should try getting outside with your kids. In the summer take them to the park, in the winter take them sledding. There are plenty of things to keep you moving outside.

Be Happier

A happier person is one that treats themselves right. If you value yourself or your sanity, be kind to yourself and be happier. I know, this sounds SO easy, right? Well, for me, it’s honestly not that easy.

Every day you have the opportunity to wake up and CHOOSE to be happy! Click To Tweet

Some things that I like to do to stay happy include: Playing with my son, snuggling my husband, spending time with friends and family, my essential oils, watching TV, reading a good book, chocolate, taking a shower, getting ready for the day, and (believe it or not) cleaning!

Yes, you heard me right, I said cleaning. I HATE cleaning! I am the laziest person ever, but after my house is clean, I feel so much better, and I can finally relax. Plus, once I get started, I tend to start organizing everything and end up cleaning even more.

Well, there you have it!

Those are the 3 things I try to focus on to make myself a healthier person. My final suggestion would be to write it down! The trendy thing now is to have a bullet journal or planner. I like to write my goals in that and track my progress. If you are interested at all in my previous post, click here! I talk about my New Years Resolutions and my simple game plan to stick to it.

I want to try to write a post a month to help keep myself on track with my resolutions and goals. Keep your eyes open for that too!

My 2018 New Year’s Resolution, and How I Plan to Stick to it!

Did you make a New Year’s Resolution?

I sure did! This year I decided to mix it up a little and do the same resolution I always do… With a little spin!

I promise I mixed it up slightly…

My New Year’s resolution is:

To treat my body better!

Yup, every year I tell myself I am going to “Be Healthier”, “Lose Weight”, “Exercise More”, Etc. Etc. Blah, Blah, Blah! Every year I do great for like a minute, or even half the year! But this year is different!

I simply, want to treat my body better

There is more to this than eating healthy and working out. For example, one of my goals is to wash my face every night before I go to bed. I also want to use lotion more and keep my skin hydrated.

So how do I plan on sticking to this?

Well for one, I have a community to help me stick to it. That’s all of you! I also like to make short term and long term goals with rewards for meeting those goals. Rewards don’t always work for everyone, but it gives me something to look forward too!

For example:

I am going to pick 3 goals to work on every month, with the end goal of treating my body better. My goals for January are:

  1. Wash my face every night.
    1. If I wash my face every night before bed, after 30 days I am going to treat myself to a relaxing facial!
  2. Drink 64oz or more of water every single day.
    1. If I am able to do this for 30 days, I am going to treat myself to a wonderful full body massage!
  3. Read daily!
    1. This is the reward in itself! I love to read, it relaxes me. Reading strengthens the mind and offers some sort of peace to the crazy days!

How am I going to keep myself accountable?

I plan on tracking everything in a journal, or a planner of sorts. That way I can keep track and make sure I am following up every day! The goal is that after 30 days, these will become a habit and I can continue them with ease.

I also plan to leaning on my friends and family, like YOU! In return, I hope that you lean on me for help as well. I plan on writing more about your needs and the things you want help with and the things you are interested in.

Leave me a comment below of what you would like to see next!

How to Save Money During the Holidays

The “Holidays”, the dreaded holidays…

Oh yeah, I think you know exactly where this is going! The holidays can be stressful, so stressful it will make your HAIR FALL OUT! Okay, maybe not everyone is like that, but sometimes the holidays can be super stressful. BUT, if you can SAVE just a little bit of money, it could be less stressful! So while you are trying to plan your parties, get gifts for everyone, wrap presents, work, be a mom, and all that other stuff lets talk about some tips to help you save a little green this holiday season!

Make a list, and check it twice…

Ha! I’m serious! One of the easiest ways to keep a level head and to save some cash is to make a list. I write a shopping list when I have to buy for a party. I make a list when I have to buy presents for people. Hell, I even make a list of naughty and nice friends! JUST KIDDING, but not really… It’s on my whiteboard in my office lol, but that is a running joke.

Friends and Family Discounts

I can hear it now, “I don’t have any friends” “No one in my family works in retail”. Well, guess what? You do! How many of your friends are distributors, or work a second job during the season? Shop local, keep your eyes and ears open, and be optimistic! All you have to do is ask. What’s the worst that could happen? They could say no, and then you continue on.

Use Coupons

YAASSSS! This is the best. Shop at stores where you get rewards, keep your eyes open for GIVEAWAYS, and watch the paper and online ads for coupons. There are PLENTY of coupons out there, and they are EVERYWHERE! Before you check out at an online store, Google coupons for that company. I can usually find one 7 out of 10 times.

Get your DIY on!

Do It Yourself! Get your inner Crafty Cat out! Inside everyone is a little bit of creativity. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or elaborate. It can be simple and easy. Some of the most thoughtful gifts are made from the heart!

Super Spotlight, Roddom’s Rustic Designs (GIVEAWAY POST)

YAY! December is finally here!

I LOVE December! For multiple reasons too. My birthday, the season of GIVING, all the lights, the decorations, etc. Today is the perfect day to introduce you to Lakota. She and I went to high school together! Lakota has started her own business, and well, I’ll just let her tell you more about it!

Remember to read all the way through to find out about our FIRST giveaway of the 12 Days of Giveaways!

Roddom’s Rustic Designs- Where we began!

I have always had a passion for creating. I started out making small crafts with my siblings and scrapbooking when I was young. As I got older I started doing more wood crafts and home decor items. I always had ideas forwarding around in my head about what project I wanted to work on next!
~
Justin took many woodworking classes in school and enjoyed building. He would often build wood projects such as picture frames and holiday decor to give as Christmas presents.
~
As we were dating he would often build small gifts for me.  He spent a weekend in his uncle’s shop with a stack of barn wood and made me a beautiful rustic bedframe. Five years later I refuse to upgrade our bed to a bigger size because I do not want to get rid of the frame he built.

(Make sure to “Like” Lakota’s Facebook and Instagram when you are done reading this post! Links at the bottom)

As we moved into our first place together we were short on cash and needed a few additional pieces of furniture and had very little decor.  We tore apart some old pallets left from the hay pile and a few evenings later we now had matching nightstands. I took leftover scraps and starting making a few pallet signs to decorated our bare walls. Before we knew it people had seen the stuff we built and wanted one of their own or would request custom pieces.
~
We have since expanded and built many different furniture pieces, some of which include- coffee tables, end tables, kitchen tables, entryway tables, tree halls, shelves and more.  Most all of our home decor pieces are all made from the scrap wood pile left from whatever the last big project was. We love creating and spending time in the shop together and now take our son to the shop with us where he enjoys playing and watches us work.

Take a look at her work!

Disagreeing with Grace and What to be Thankful for

Nothing is more uncomfortable than disagreeing with someone.

You can’t live your whole life without disagreeing with people though. That’s just not possible! ESPECIALLY this time of year. It’s Thanksgiving, the holidays are coming, the family is coming into town, etc etc. You get my point.

I don’t have all the wisdom in the world, but what I do have is an undesirable need to please everyone. Seriously, it’s kind of a problem! I don’t know why, but I get so uncomfortable when someone is left out, or upset at me, or unhappy with their care, or whatever! So, I have developed a few tricks to help me in my own personal life to help avoid uncomfortable situations. Here is a couple when it comes to disagreeing with someone.

  1. Never bend yourself to fit someone else’s expectations.
  2. The most important thing to remember is that it is OKAY to disagree.
  3. Be the bigger person.
  4. You DON’T have to forgive and forget.
  5. You DO have to forget to forgive.
  6. Most importantly, be thankful!

So what should you be thankful for?

This one is so hard, but so dang easy at the same time! I can’t tell you what you are thankful for, I can’t tell you what to think. So why don’t I hit a few points that I myself am thankful for?

Obviously, there is my son. He is light in my world, my everything. I owe my whole world to him.

Then there is my husband and the rest of my family. I was blessed with a mostly normal, very supportive, very fun to hang out with family!

I am also very thankful for my job and my career. Without it, I would not be able to have the life that I have. I am also extremely lucky to work with some of my best friends! It’s like a family, and I cherish that!

I am thankful for the roof over my head and the car that I drive. Sometimes we take those things for granted, and truly, if you think about it, you are extremely lucky to have them!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Comment below telling me what YOU are thankful for this holiday season!

Meal Planning Vs. Meal Prepping

I know what you are thinking…

Is there really a difference between meal planning and meal prepping? YES! There most definitely is!

Let me break it down the easy way… Think about the words themselves. “Planning” and “Prepping”. I googled it for you. Here are the actual definitions.

plan·ning
/ˈplaniNG/
noun
  1. the process of making plans for something
prep·ping
/ˈprepiNG/
noun
  1. the action or process of preparing something, or preparing for something.
So why is this even important to know the difference?

Well, when it gets to the nitty-gritty, it’s not important at all. What matters is that you actually do it! BUT, you can’t prep without planning. AND, if you only plan and don’t prep, what’s the point? Do you see what I mean?

I hope that makes sense to you and helps clarify the importance of both. I know it’s short and sweet and to the point, but that is exactly what you need it to be, huh?

AT HOME DATE NIGHT IDEAS with Erin from Everyday Events!

Erin with Everyday EventsI’m Erin and the writer behind Everyday Events.

I’m a mom, wife, party planner, holiday lover and blogger.

Blogging has been something I have wanted to do for years, but never felt like I had anything special to bring to the table. I toyed with the idea and talked to my husband about it multiple times, but always pushed my feelings aside. In 2014 my life got flipped upside down when I received a phone call that my Mom was in ICU and not expected to make it. This life changing event is what drove me to start blogging. I felt a fire inside of me and a conviction to tell my story. So I started Everyday Events as a way to honor my Mom, to talk about being a motherless mother and to show how beautiful life can be, even after loss. I have a passion for celebrating life’s everyday events and never want to stop seeing the beauty in the world. I hope you find comfort and inspiration in my blog, but above all I hope you find a reason to celebrate.

AT HOME DATE NIGHT IDEAS

Real date nights don’t happen that often around here. With J.D.’s crazy work schedule, it can be hard to set aside time to go out on a date. So, we had to get creative, and come up with at home date night ideas for when the kids go to bed! All of these dates are so fun and I always look forward to when J.D. comes home early from work, we put the kids to bed, and go “out on a date.” So put those kids to bed early tonight and have a date night!
At Home Date Night Ideas with Erin from Everyday Events
“When I first made contact with Everyday Events, I LOVED her website. I fell in love with this post particularly, because it spoke to what I needed in life at that moment.” -Lynsey from Real Mom Blogs
One. Order take out, light a few candles & pop open a bottle of wine. This is our go-to date night idea, because if you have small children, you know dinner time can be a circus. Everybody needs something, forks are being dropped on the floor, milk is almost always being spilled, and just when J.D. and I get to sit down our food is cold & the kids say they are done. Eating dinner while it’s hot, enjoying a glass of wine and having an adult conversation is easily one of our favorite things to do.
Two. Lay out some blankets and watch the stars. J.D. and I have also been known to grab the baby monitor and climb on top of the roof! There is something so romantic about watching the stars and making a wish on the shooting ones.
Three. Conversation starters. Sometimes it feels like all J.D. and I talk about are the kids, work & what’s going on currently in our lives. We don’t talk about our dreams, hopes & fears as much as we should. A while back I started looking online and found some amazing conversation starters. When J.D. is gone a lot for work or when life gets super hectic, we will bring these out to reconnect, and remember there is more to talk about than the kids!

Want to get something across to your husband? Go to our Dear Husband category!

Four. Sit on the patio, turn on some music & watch the sun set.
Five. Eat popcorn & play card games. J.D. and I both grew up playing card games and love playing together. It brings back so many wonderful childhood memories and I love making these memories with J.D. too. This is a perfect date night idea for winter, when you literally can’t go anywhere!
Six. Have a picnic in the living room and watch a movie. This one is super fun and you can be as creative as you want with your picnic. You could have fondue, wine or beer tasting, or theme the evening with food and a movie from a different country!

J.D. and I have been together for 12 years, and while so many things have changed, one thing remains the same. We love each other like crazy. These date night ideas might not be super fancy, or cost us much money, but they help up to reconnect, laugh, and make our marriage a priority.
What are your favorite at home date night ideas?
XOXO

I hope you enjoyed this post from The Everyday Events! Here is a link to the post on her website along with some other links for you to follow!

Once Upon a Time; I got MARRIED!

Exactly one year ago today…

I got married! I thought it would be a good idea to share some of our wedding pictures with you today. I haven’t really shared a whole lot about my husband and me, or our love story. So, with each picture, I will share a random fact about our relationship.

"Can I get the rings please?"
I know you’ve seen this picture recently, but I love it SO much! See that man in the middle, the one marrying us? Yeah, that’s my dad!

  Behind the lens

First things first, we were lucky enough to hire the best (in my opinion) wedding photographer in the state of Utah. Her name is Ashley DeHart. You can find out more about her in the spotlight I did on her a while back.

No Kids Zone
Yes, you can share this post with your kids! I just think this picture is so funny. We had an area that we wanted to make sure kids didn’t play in, only because it wasn’t a safe area.

Let’s dive into these random facts! Starting with me, cause you know, I’m selfish.. Ha!

Random Fact: I made the first move… Yup.

My Girls!
Meet my line up of girls! From left to right you have my gorgeous, free-spirited, fun-loving niece Ky Ky! Next to her is my personal wedding planner, my sassy red-headed friend, girl-I-can’t-live-without, Sara. Then there is me in the big white dress… My right-hand-man, partner-in-crime, mini me who stole all the good looks in the family, my little sister Hailey. And lastly, definitely the shortest with the biggest personality, Sage! To be honest, I can’t live without these girls, and I am so glad I have them in my life.

Next up; Let’s pick on Craig

Random Fact: He is 11.5 years older than me! That means when he was learning how to drive, I was learning how to read! Let that soak in for a minute…

Love of my life

More Random Facts:

Craig and I dated for almost 5 years before we got married. Our son, Henry, was 3-years-old when we got married. He was the ring bearer!

Ring Bearer

Our Families…

Random Fact: My family is rather large. I have six brothers and sisters. Craig only has one sister. His family is quite small. No matter what the differences are, luckily, we both fit perfectly in the other’s family.

Private Concert
My beautiful sister and brother singing to Craig and me.

So how did we meet?

Random Fact: We met in a bowling league in Morgan, UT.

Cowgirl boots and Weddings
Sometimes it’s the little details that matter. I asked my photographer to take pictures of even the smallest things, as to not miss a single detail of our wedding.

More selfish Random Facts about me:

I am a control freak and suffer from high anxiety issues. So you can only imagine that the whole wedding planning process was very painful for me and the people who were trying to help me and trying not to kill me. I planned every single detail of our wedding down to the very confetti that covered our tables.

Open Bar Wedding Sign
Well, of course! This absolutely HAD to happen!

Random Fact:

I am a rum drinker. My favorite? Malibu, because it has that fruity, summery hint. Craig really enjoys Jim Beam. HOWEVER, Craig and I very rarely drink together.

The League of Extraordinary Nieces
Side note fun fact: I am the proud auntie of not one, not even two, but SEVEN nieces! Finally, I was able to get them all in one place. Meet “The league of extraordinary nieces” P.s. I might be the coolest aunt, but of course, I am being a little biased.
Groomsmen
Of course, we had to get a picture (and this isn’t the only one) of all the boys!

We are fiercely loyal to our friends.

Random Fact: Craig didn’t meet my bestie Sage until well into the wedding planning process. I didn’t meet his friend Matt until the day before our wedding.

Tiny little bucket. Country Weddings.

The Random Facts Continue…

We don’t enjoy the same kind of movies. He really enjoys horror films, and of course, I love Rom-Coms. LUCKILY, we both really enjoy action movies and movies that make you really think.

A girl and her Daddy on her wedding day
This is probably the most important, most influential man in my whole life!

Kickin’ it Old School

Random Fact: Craig asked both of my dads for their permission before asking me to marry him.

Star Wedding Topper
We custom ordered our wedding topper from Etsy. I wanted to link it here for you, but I can’t find it anymore… If I find it, I will let you know!

So how did he do it?

Random Fact: He didn’t! He had our son ask me for him. My heart absolutely melted, and I was caught off guard.

Wedding Guests. Family and Friends.

Okay, have you had enough yet?

For your LAST Random Fact: I thought I would share what we are doing for our anniversary. Well, not much of anything. We played around with really big ideas, months ago. None of which we did. Then we thought we would go to a movie and a really nice dinner. Nah! Then we thought about just dinner and a night without the kid. WELL, we decided on a movie in those fancy new luxury seats, with movie theater food, and absolutely nothing special.

We have plenty of anniversaries ahead of us.

Black and White. A perfect match!
Black and White. A perfect match! I am nothing without my glasses, and Craig is nothing without his hat. We are nothing without each other…

We aren’t going anywhere, and this is just the first of many for us. We figured we might as well start out small, and work our way up.

Thank you!

Thank you for enduring through all of these pictures and random facts! I am so happy to be married to this man, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of our lives together.
